How to get away from Java?

Hi,

Recently I believe I downloaded a new version of Java to run HouseCall
or something, and things have pretty much sucked ever since. I use an
old slow computer, and whenever the Java icon shows up in the tool bar
in the lower right corner, things get so slow they barely move. Never having
had the problem before I tried to find a remove Java program, but noooo....,
I couldn't find one to do it. So I hunted it down with a hard drive search and
trashed everything I could find associated with it. Everything speeded back
up to normal, a few images stopped moving, and everthing else was fine.
I was happy with the situation until trying to start the computer next time it
didn't want to start anymore because some programs associated with Jave .dll
files or something might not work...so I could start it in safe mode and took
the damn thing back out of the trash. Then the computer would start again,
but going to some websites still engages Java, so I'm still screwed by the
same thing. So I tried deleting all the .exe programs associated with it, hoping
it wouldn't work but whatever it had gotten dependant on its .dlls (or whatever)
would still work well enough to start the computer. But doing that didn't stop
the damn thing...somehow it either reloads its .exe files so it can start up and
slow everything down again, or it doesn't need them to make things suck.
How to successfully get rid of this thing? It's as bad as a virus to me.

Thanks for any help,
David

For some reason, the newer versions of java doesn't have an
uninstaller. You can turn off the icon in the systray by looking in
the Control Panel, you should see the icon for Java. Double click on
that and look under Advanced, Misc and uncheck that. Also, java is a
memory hog, so you need lots of RAM.

If you really want java removed then you have to remove everything
regarding java. Close Netscape, then use your file manager and remove
the files: NPJava11.dll, NPJava12.dll, NPJava13.dll, NPJava14.dll,
NPJPI*.dll [this one will be a different number depending on which
version you have], NPOJI*.dll [same with this one]. They will be
located in the plugin directory of the Netscape program directory.

Then go into the windows registry and remove everything located here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\JavaSoft
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\JavaSoft
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\java
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\JavaPlugin
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\JavaPlugin.* [depends on the version you're using]
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\JavaPlugin.FamilyVersionSupport
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\JavaWebStart.isInstalled
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\JavaWebStart.isInstalled.* [again depends on the
version you're using]
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\JNLPFile

and that should do it. DO NOT remove anything that says javascript.
Two different things and they have nothing in common with each other.

Now, you can remove the java files.

Good Luck!!!!

Thanks. I need it. That thing is *nasty!!!* from what I can tell. There
was nothing I could find by searching "hkey", but I got rid of all the .dll
files. After that the computer would still start up okay, and I could go to
websites and not get slowed down severly because Java wasn't starting
up any more, but now when I go to online banking, and probably other
things I haven't found yet, Netscape brings up the message that:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

It has done that every time I've tried to check the bank since I trimmed
things out of Java. Now I guess I'll go get rid of more with the hopes
that has something to do with it, and that I can get rid of enough to
allow me to check the bank but not so much the computer won't
start. Java is the worst problem I've had in years...it is an MSN sort of
thing?
